After narrowly avoiding a face-off with over 10,000 angry farmers in Dublin last Thursday, the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, was whisked off to Cork to speak on the Lisbon Treaty. Mr Barrosso’s two-day Irish visit culminated in his trip on Friday to Cork Docklands, the Cork City Chambers, and finally with an address to students at University College Cork.
His speech in UCC, entitled ‘Why the Lisbon Treaty is Good for Ireland’, covered a range of issues including economic policy and climate change. Mr Barrosso insisted that the treaty makes no change to the rules on corporate tax rates, saying ‘Nothing can be imposed against Irish will.’ He also assured the audience that ‘This is not a question of Ireland versus the rest. Far from going against the grain, your economic policies are rather something that other parts of Europe want to follow.’
After the address, Mr Barrosso answered questions from students on a range of European issues, and urged them to use their vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty referendum on June 12th.
