The European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a plan to set up an EU-wide task force aimed at fighting cancer. The proposal put forward by Independent MEP Kathy Sinnott involves creating a centre of excellence for collecting and exchanging best practice in the provision of cancer treatments across Europe. It would also focus on promoting healthy lifestyles, running information campaigns on cancer screening and supporting cancer research.
Ms Sinnot’s resolution also calls on member states to take appropriate action on prevention, detection and treatment of cancer, including palliative care, in order to reduce the increasing numbers of cancer cases resulting from demographic change in the coming decades.
Meanwhile closer to home, the campaign continues to ensure the retention of cancer services in the North West. Local MEP Marian Harkin has described the government’s plan to end cancer services at Sligo General Hospital as ‘a disgrace of enormous proportions’. She is urging people to sign a petition protesting against the government’s failure to provide adequate cancer care for the region.
