A proposal to end to street homelessness by the year 2015 has been given fresh political momentum this week after an announcement that the European Parliament is to adopt the plan as part of its policy. Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald was one of five MEPs who launched a petition last year urging her colleagues to support a written declaration on the issue. It has since achieved the majority of MEP signatures required to enable it to become parliamentary policy.
Speaking from Brussels, the Sinn Féin MEP described the move as ‘hugely significant’. She said, ‘This means that the European Parliament can actively pressure member states and other EU institutions to fulfil this commitment. The Irish government has pledged to end homelessness by 2010 – if we achieve this we can set an example and lead the way in ensuring the rest of the EU meets the 2015 deadline.’
It’s estimated that there are about 2,000 homeless people living in Dublin, a quarter of whom are children.
