Three transition year students from Scariff Community College in County Clare have beaten off competition from schools in Galway, Sligo, Roscommon and Donegal in the regional heats of a public speaking contest staged by the National Forum on Europe. The Clare school battled it out against rival teams from Gort Community School, Ardscoil Mhuire in Ballinasloe and Presentation College in Tuam to earn their spot in the Northwest constituency final which takes place at the end of January.
All the competing teams spoke on the topic ‘Should the EU assist the developing world?’, impressing the judges at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology with their level of European knowledge. However after much conferring, the panel singled out Scariff Community College for their overall presentation skills, knowledge and team work. Victorious team members Cassie Comerford, Aideen McNamara and Caimin Condron are now a step closer to competing in the national final in March, where the overall winner will enjoy a fully paid trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg for their transition year class.
Local MEP Sean O Neachtain, who has been involved in the competition from the start, praised all the competing students and their teachers. The former teacher said the public speaking competition helps students understand the significance of EU policy making, and ‘fills an important void in the curriculum’.
