Irish consumers are being advised to check there’s a clearly labelled CE mark on the packet when buying toys this Christmas. Irish MEP Eoin Ryan told shoppers, ‘The CE symbol means a product is certified under EU safety standards; it’s the only way to have full confidence in the toy you’re buying.’
The warning comes as the European Parliament adopted a new proposal on toy safety in record time ahead of the festive season. The draft legislation beefs up safety regulations, bans carcinogenic or toxic substances and restricts the use of heavy metals or fragrance in toys.
‘The EU is trying to strengthen its protections for toys on imports that are sourced from outside Europe,’ said Mr Ryan.
22 million toys were recalled worldwide in the last five years, mostly from China. In Ireland, almost 120 thousand toys were withdrawn from the market during the same period, due to safety defects.
