Representatives of key tourist and business interests in County Clare are hoping to boost the region’s international profile next week when they welcome a group of visiting MEPs from Brussels. Members of the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee will discuss how best to maintain the region as a destination for tourism and investment during a series of meetings with the Mid West Regional Authority, Shannon Development and Shannon Airport Authority. The delegation of MEPs from the UK, Germany, Hungary and Romania will be briefed on the future for Shannon International Airport and the importance of the western rail corridor. The group will also take in the highlights of the region’s tourist attractions during their five-day trip, including the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren Centre in Kilfenora and the birthplace of GAA founder Michael Cusack in Carron.
Northwest MEPs Jim Higgins and Sean O Neachtain, who organised the visit, said it will be a significant opportunity for all interested parties in Clare to discuss EU policies which affect the region. ‘The European Union has key powers concerning transport, aviation and regional policy as well as the promotion of broadband and research and technology initiatives; we’re bringing together key economic and political players to discuss these issues,’ said Mr O Neachtain.
