It’s often easier to complain than to count one’s blessings, but a new survey measuring worldwide quality of life shows Dubliners have more reason than most to be grateful. The capital is ranked 25th best place to live out of a total of 215 cities across the globe, in a study published by Mercer consultants this week. Vienna topped the list for the city with the highest quality of life, while conflict-ridden Baghdad got the wooden spoon. And, although its own inhabitants might disagree, Dublin was rated a better place to live than Paris, New York, London and Tokyo.
The survey measured quality of life under a range of headings including health, education, transport, climate, economy, political and social environment. One area where Dublin fared poorly was infrastructure; a failing attributed to traffic congestion and the lack of rail transport and services to the airport. Dublin has maintained roughly the same quality of life in the survey’s annual rankings since 2004, however this year’s result shows a slight slip from our best years in 2005 and 2006, when Dublin was placed 22nd.
