The European Union has launched a new recruitment drive to find fifteen proofreaders who are fluent in Irish. Successful candidates could be offered a contract to work in the European Parliament in Brussels, the Official Publications Office in Luxembourg, or in another EU institution.
‘Employment opportunities for Irish speakers have received a major boost since Irish became an official EU language in 2007,’ said Eimear Ní Bhroin spokesperson for the European Parliament in Ireland. ‘The EU institutions already employs Irish language translators, interpreters and lawyer linguists – now there are vacancies for proofreaders too.’
Kerry native and fluent Irish speaker Joe Higgins also welcomed the new jobs, and said he would like to hear more Irish being spoken in Brussels. ‘The only problem is the miniscule time we are given to make speeches in the Parliament, but we’ll get around that!’ added the Socialist MEP.
Apart from fluent Irish, anyone interested in going for the job must have a third level qualification, three years’ relevant work experience, and a second language. ‘Irish speakers who apply for these positions have a significant advantage, as the second language required is English,’ said Ms Ní Bhroin.
