Lisbon spend is ‘gross abuse of public funds’ says MEP (July 9th, 2009)
July 9, 2009
Dublin’s Socialist MEP Joe Higgins has strongly criticised the government’s decision to spend €220,000 of taxpayers’ money on a pro-Lisbon postcard campaign. Every household in the country has been sent a small bilingual postcard this week outlining the legal guarantees that have been secured to address voter concerns ahead of the second Lisbon referendum on October 2nd. But Mr Higgins has blasted the move as a ‘naked bit of opportunism to get the Fianna Fáil view out at the expense of the taxpayers’.
Meanwhile, bookmakers are showing that the likelihood of a ‘Yes’ vote on polling day has increased significantly since before the first referendum. Betting firm Paddy Powers says the odds in favour of the treaty have shortened to 1/6 from an original 4/5. The chances of a ‘No’ vote were put at 7/2 odds this week.
