Fine Gael’s top man in Europe said this week he felt it was ‘unnecessary’ for the public to read the Lisbon Treaty ahead of the second referendum. Dublin MEP Gay Mitchell, who lead his party’s Lisbon drive last time around, said voters should trust politicians to analyse the contents of the treaty. ‘People don’t have to take the time to inform themselves on the issues – you elect political representatives to do that on your behalf,’ he said.
The MEP also said Irish people ‘don’t want too long a campaign’ on Lisbon this year, and warned against the dangers of ‘Lisbon fatigue’ setting in among voters too far ahead of polling day on October 2nd.
‘The public has already been subjected to a first campaign, so we will all get a break in August when things traditionally shut down in Brussels. But we will hit the ground running in September,’ he added.
