Marine scientists, oceanographers, and anyone involved in maritime research is being encouraged to apply to an ambitious funding programme launched by the European Commission. The ‘Ocean of Tomorrow’ scheme is designed to support large, multidisciplinary research projects that explore the interaction between human maritime activities and marine ecosystems.
EU Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik said the scheme will help to ‘reconcile the potentially competing goals of sustainable economic growth and the preservation of our seas and oceans’.
The funding is open to all EU member states, and is divided into three categories. €11 million will be allocated to projects investigating the economic and environmental consequences of climate change in the Arctic.
€12.5 million will go towards research on human and natural impact on marine life, while €10.5 million will deal with the potential environmental impact of sub-seabed carbon storage.
The deadline for project proposals is 14th January 2010, and successful applications will be announced by autumn of next year.
