You don’t miss the water until the well runs dry… (21st January, 2010)

Hundreds of homes across the capital are still experiencing reduced water supplies as local authorities struggle to deal with continuing leaks following ‘the big freeze’. Tankers remain in place at several locations around the city, with Dublin City Council warning that it is unable to give notice of which water supplies are being cut off and when. However a spokesperson for the council claims all the various leaks should be fixed within the coming weeks.
In the meantime, Dubliners are being urged not to leave taps running, as this practice is adding to pressure on short supplies. Dublin MEP Gay Mitchell said we need to re-educate ourselves about how we use water and eliminate what he says are ‘bad habits that have crept in’. ‘For the sake of the planet, but also for the sake of having adequate water supplies when we need them – we have to teach ourselves the value of water,’ said the former Lord Mayor.
